Silent Witness is a British crime drama television series that follows the work of a team of forensic pathologists in the London-based Lyell Centre as they investigate various cases involving suspicious deaths. The team comprises of Dr. Sam Ryan, Dr. Nikki Alexander, Dr. Harry Cunningham, and several other forensic experts.

Season 3 episode 5, titled "Discovery," opens with Sam and Harry reluctantly agreeing to investigate the case of a young disabled woman who died two years ago after apparently falling down the stairs. The case was previously handled by the police but was never solved due to the lack of evidence. However, when a local journalist approaches the Lyell Centre with new information that suggests foul play, the team is compelled to relook at the case and find out what really happened to the victim.

As the investigation progresses, the team discovers that the victim, whose name was Joanne Barnes, suffered from a rare genetic disorder that left her severely disabled and bedridden most of the time. Her mother, who was her primary caregiver, was always protective of her and never allowed anyone to see her. Joanne's father had died a few years before, and her brother, Ross Barnes, was estranged from the family due to some conflict with his mother.

Nikki visits Ross at his workplace to inquire about his sister, and he reveals that he and Joanne were very close before he was forced to leave home. He speaks lovingly about his sister and their shared love for astronomy, but also expresses bitterness towards his mother for being overprotective and not allowing them to have a normal childhood.

Meanwhile, Harry and Sam examine Joanne's medical history and find evidence that she could not have died from falling down the stairs. The injuries on her body indicate that she was physically assaulted before her death. They also examine the CCTV footage from the day of Joanne's death and notice a man leaving the house shortly before the time of her fall. They identify the man as Joanne's ex-boyfriend, who was previously cleared of any involvement in the case.

The team tracks down the ex-boyfriend, who denies any involvement but admits to being present at Joanne's house on the day of her death. He reveals that he had gone to visit Joanne to reconcile with her after a recent breakup but was turned away by Joanne's mother. He claims that he saw another man leaving the house when he arrived, but didn't think much of it at the time.

The Lyell Centre team continues to dig deeper into the case and eventually uncovers a dark secret that Joanne's mother had been hiding for years. The revelation leads to an unexpected twist in the case that puts the team in danger and forces them to race against time to solve the murder and bring the killer to justice.

Overall, Silent Witness season 3 episode 5 is a compelling and emotionally charged episode that deals with themes of family, disability, and betrayal. The episode explores the complexities of relationships and the long-lasting effects of trauma on individuals and families. The talented cast delivers strong performances, and the intricate plot keeps viewers engaged from start to finish.
