In Slayers season 1 episode 16 titled “Passion! Shall We Give Our Lives for the Stage?”, our heroes meet a young playwright named Marty who has a passion for writing plays that reflect the reality of the world around him. However, he struggles to find actors who are willing to portray his realistic and sometimes uncomfortable characters.
Marty’s luck changes when the leader of an acting troupe named Sylphiel agrees to take on his play, which is about the struggles of a half-elf in a society that shuns her kind. However, Marty’s excitement is short-lived when he learns that Sylphiel plans to cut some of the play's more difficult scenes in order to make it more palatable for a wider audience.
Meanwhile, our protagonist Lina and her companions Gourry, Zelgadis, and Amelia are recruited to act in the play. Lina is initially hesitant but agrees to take on the role of the half-elf protagonist, as she sees an opportunity to earn some extra money.
As the group starts rehearsing, tensions rise when Sylphiel’s plans to make changes to the script are met with resistance from Marty. Things come to a head when Sylphiel is kidnapped by an unknown assailant who demands that the play be canceled.
Despite the danger, Lina and her companions are determined to perform the play. They hatch a plan to sneak into the kidnapper’s hideout and rescue Sylphiel. They manage to defeat the attackers and retrieve Sylphiel, but they are left with little time to prepare for the performance.
With their backs against the wall, the group puts on a surprisingly successful performance, earning rave reviews from the audience. Marty is pleased with the outcome, but Lina recognizes that the group's success came at a great cost. She reflects on the courage it takes to pursue one’s dreams, and wonders if the sacrifices the group made were worth it.
