In the ninth episode of the first season of Songland, the multi-talented British vocalist, Leona Lewis, drops by looking for her next big hit. Four songwriters have to pitch their original works in front of an experienced panel of producer-mentors which includes Ryan Tedder, Ester Dean, and Shane McAnally. With Leona Lewis as the guest artist, the stakes are higher than ever as the contestants vie to have their song chosen for her next album.

First up is Rozee, a young songwriter from Ohio, who brings a song called "When You're Alone". She has written a classic ballad about feeling unlovable, overcoming your fears and the kind of acceptance that comes from friendship. Ester Dean calls it a “movie-worthy song” but Ryan Tedder feels that, although it is a good song, it is not the perfect fit for Leona’s voice.

Next, Nashville-based Charlie Snyder presents "Better With You". It is a midtempo pop song about realizing the importance of having someone special in your life. The judges commend Charlie on his lyrics and melody, but they feel the song lacks originality.

Third up is Sam James, a songwriter from California with a song called "Greenlight". It is an upbeat pop-rock track about being given the green light for a new relationship. The mentors all appreciate the type of energy Sam has brought to the competition and praise his creativity, but they also feel that the song doesn't match Leona's vibe.

Finally, the last contestant of the day is the Los Angeles-based songwriter, JeRonelle. He performs his song titled "Nothin Left". This is an emotional ballad about the end of a relationship, the difficulty of moving on, and accepting the closure. The judges appreciate the vulnerability and rawness of his songwriting and Leona instantly connects with the song.

The producer-mentors, together with Leona, then retreat to the studio-mentor room to work on the chosen song, Nothin Left. They transform the original track into a sultry, emotional and uplifting anthem with a stunning melody that suits Leona Lewis' range and voice. The songwriters witness the magic happening in the studio and appreciate the judges' creativity in transforming the song into a masterpiece.

Finally, Leona Lewis showcases her stunning vocals and performs the final version of the song, "Nothin Left", in front of a live audience and the four songwriters. Her performance leaves everyone blown away. The episode ends with JeRonelle walking away with the ultimate prize - his song, "Nothin Left", will be recorded by Leona Lewis herself. The episode is a great reminder of the artistry and technical know-how required to create a hit song.
