Sunday Night Football Season 9 Episode 21 New England Patriots at San Diego Chargers
- December 7, 2014
The 9th season of Sunday Night Football comes to an exciting conclusion in the 21st episode as the New England Patriots travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers at their home field. Both teams come into the game with a lot on the line, as the Patriots are fighting for playoff positioning while the Chargers are trying to stay alive in the hunt for a postseason berth.
The Patriots enter the game with a 9-4 record and looking to bounce back after a tough loss in their previous game. Led by quarterback Tom Brady, the Patriots have one of the most explosive offenses in the league, averaging over 27 points per game. Brady will look to continue his impressive season as he faces a tough Chargers defense led by All-Pro cornerback Casey Hayward.
On the other side of the ball, the Chargers come into the game with a 7-6 record and fighting for their playoff lives. Led by quarterback Philip Rivers, the Chargers have a potent passing attack that can put up points in a hurry. Rivers will look to take advantage of a Patriots defense that has struggled at times this season.
The game kicks off with both teams feeling each other out in the opening quarter. The Chargers strike first, however, as Rivers leads a lengthy drive that ends with a touchdown pass to standout receiver Keenan Allen. The Patriots respond quickly, driving down the field and tying the game with a touchdown run from running back Sony Michel.
The game remains tight throughout the second quarter, with both teams trading blows and exchanging touchdowns. The Chargers take a narrow lead into halftime, up 21-17.
In the third quarter, the Patriots come out firing on all cylinders. Brady leads an impressive drive that ends with a touchdown pass to receiver Julian Edelman, giving New England the lead. The defense steps up as well, forcing Rivers and the Chargers offense to punt on their next two possessions.
The Patriots then drive down the field again, and Michel punches in his second touchdown of the game, extending the lead to 31-21. The Chargers try to mount a comeback, but they are unable to get anything going on offense, and the Patriots maintain their lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Chargers finally find the end zone again early in the fourth quarter, cutting the Patriots lead to just three points. The Patriots respond with a field goal, but the Chargers refuse to go quietly, as Rivers engineers another impressive drive that ends with a game-tying touchdown pass to tight end Hunter Henry.
With just a few minutes left in the game, the Patriots get the ball back and embark on a long, methodical drive. They chew up the clock and get into field goal range, and kicker Stephen Gostkowski nails a 45-yard field goal to give the Patriots the lead with just seconds remaining.
The Chargers get one last chance to pull off the comeback, but Rivers throws an interception on the final play of the game, and the Patriots hold on for the hard-fought victory.
The win ensures that the Patriots will earn a playoff berth, while the Chargers' playoff hopes take a major hit. The game will go down as one of the most exciting of the season, with both teams showing tremendous heart and determination throughout the contest.
