Ep 3. Shots and Salsa

Shots and Salsa is the third episode of Superstore's first season that aired on November 30, 2015.

The episode opens with the employees of Cloud 9 preparing for the annual salsa-making competition. While some employees like Garrett and Glenn take the competition seriously, others like Amy choose to stay out of it entirely. Meanwhile, Mateo is still struggling with the identity of his undocumented cousin, advised by his colleague, and best friend Jonah to not reveal it to their boss.

As the competition progresses, Amy and Glenn team up to make salsa, and their recipe becomes a hit. However, when their co-worker Marcus suggests adding hot sauce to it, their fancy salsa turns out too hot for the customers.

During the competition, Mateo receives the news that his cousin has been detained by the immigration authorities. With the help of his coworkers, he successfully manages to bail him out, and his cousin vows to leave behind his criminal past in the interest of obtaining legal documents.

The episode also addresses some of the minor characters' relationships such as Dina's non-existent love life, and Cheyenne's complicated romantic status. In the end, Glenn's hot and spicy salsa wins the competition with a narrow margin while Marcus takes the second place.

Overall, the episode showcases the diverse characters of Cloud 9, and how even the most simple event of a salsa-making competition can cause havoc in their lives. The show addresses many relevant topics such as immigration, identity, and relationships in a light-hearted yet meaningful manner.
