Despite his talent, he has been unable to sell any of his paintings and is on the brink of giving up when he receives a mysterious package in the mail.

The package contains a strange painting that seems to have a life of its own. Claude becomes obsessed with deciphering the meaning behind the painting, which leads him down a dark path that threatens to consume him.

As Claude delves deeper into the mystery of the painting, he begins to experience strange and disturbing visions. He becomes increasingly erratic and paranoid, and his relationship with his girlfriend Madeline (played by Jennifer Grey) begins to deteriorate.
