Louisa Durrell is a loving mother of four children who are all growing up fast and making her life a little hectic. Her eldest son, Larry, is a struggling writer who spends most of his time locked away in his room, chain-smoking and drinking. Meanwhile, Leslie, her second son, is a passionate young boy who dreams of being a farmer and keeps a menagerie of animals at home. Margo, the eldest of the two daughters, is a giggly teenager who spends all of her time trying to look beautiful. Her youngest daughter, Gerry, is a curious young boy with a love for animals and plants and a thirst for learning about new things.

The series begins with the family living in Bournemouth, where life is becoming too difficult to keep up with. Money is tight, Louisa is trying to keep everything together, and the family is feeling the pressure. After a chance meeting with a man named Spiros, who is an agent for work in Corfu, Louisa decides to take the family and move them to the Greek island for a new start.

The first episode sees the family settling into a new house in Corfu and adapting to the new way of life. The family's new home, a dilapidated villa, needs a lot of work, but the family works together to make it their own. While exploring the island, Gerry meets a local fisherman who teaches him how to fish and guides him through the beautiful nature of Corfu.
