Barry Allen is a forensic scientist for the Central City police department who specializes in working with evidence from crime scenes to help solve cases. However, his life is about to change forever when he is struck by lightning during a freak storm that gives him the power of superhuman speed.

In the opening scene of the pilot episode of The Flash, we see a young Barry Allen sitting in his room watching a storm rage outside. Suddenly, there is a massive flash of lightning and a loud explosion of thunder, and the power goes out. Barry rushes to his mother's room, terrified, only to witness her being attacked by a figure with superhuman speed. As he looks on, he sees a blur of red and yellow race by, followed by a bolt of lightning that strikes him, knocking him unconscious.

Nine months later, we find Barry in a coma at Central City Hospital. When he awakens, he discovers that he is no longer the same man he was before. He is now endowed with the power to move at incredible speed, run up walls, and even vibrate his body through solid objects.

Upon his release from the hospital, Barry quickly realizes that he is not the only one in the city with unusual abilities. He meets S.T.A.R. Labs scientist Dr. Caitlin Snow, who introduces him to her boss, Dr. Harrison Wells, the inventor of a particle accelerator that exploded and caused the freak storm that gave Barry his powers. Wells and his team of scientists -- which also includes the brilliant but socially awkward Cisco Ramon -- use their knowledge of physics and technology to help Barry learn to control his new abilities.

As Barry adjusts to his new life, he is eager to use his powers to help others, just as his late mother had inspired him to do. In particular, Barry wants to use his speed to bring to justice the mysterious figure who killed his mother and framed his father for the crime. However, the city's other metahumans prove to be a source of danger and challenge.

In the climax of the episode, Barry goes up against the villain Clyde Mardon, who has the ability to control the weather. Mardon uses his powers to wreak havoc on the city and attempts to kill Joe West, the police detective who raised Barry after his father's arrest. Barry rushes to the scene to stop Mardon, despite the fact that he has not fully mastered his abilities yet. In the end, Barry is able to stop Mardon and save Joe, but at a cost. The city's citizens now know that metahumans are real, and Barry's heroic deeds have not gone unnoticed by some of the city's most dangerous people.

As the pilot episode comes to a close, it is clear that Barry's journey to become a hero has just begun. His powers will continue to evolve and be challenged, and his relationships with his new friends and family will be tested as he tries to keep the city safe from those who would seek to harm it. The audience is left wanting more, eager to see what adventures lay ahead for The Flash.
