The Flash Season 6 Episode 1 Into the Void

  • October 8, 2019

After the heavy and devastating events of season 5, The Flash season 6 kicks off with an essential episode titled “Into the Void”. The series revolves around the life of Barry Allen (The Flash), a young and enthusiastic criminal investigator, who got struck by a lightning bolt - and gained immense powers that help in fighting the crimes in Central City.

In this episode, the devotion of every character to save Central City is higher than ever, and the intros and flashbacks provide an extensive summary of where everyone is at mentally. It is clear from the opening moments that the heroes of Central City have grown, and the forces that defend it, have doubled. The action starts immediately, with Barry and Iris dealing with the loss of Nora West-Allen and their future daughter after the epic fight against Cicada and Reverse-Flash.

As the couple struggles hard to adapt without Nora, they are interrupted by the interdimensional maven Dr. Ramsey Rosso (Bloodwork) who was watching them from afar. As we know, the villains always step up their game in every season, and Bloodwork is no exception. His connection to the murkiness, and the sickness he emanates, make him a villain the likes of which our heroes have never seen before.

The episode is structured seamlessly and manages to touch on several plot points: Joe’s (Barry's surrogate father) new job, Killer Frost’s (Caitlin’s alter ego) new clothes and Iris’ deep mourning. The episode gives fans a chance to catch up with their favorite characters in a refreshing way, after this wake-up call, fighting crime is taking a personal toll on all of them.

What takes place in the episode is familiar however, it never feels stale and manages to bring up questions that have never been asked before. The writer’s use of all the characters, in spite of the screen time, leaves no one feeling neglected. The action, the villain and the relationships between the characters all hit their marks, and do so with panache.

The show goes into the theme of family and suffering. We see Barry and Iris in mourning, but with the arrival of a new threat, they must band together even more. The stakes have never been greater for Team Flash as they go into unknown territories and dimensions. The theme of family and separation hits hard, and the execution of it draws you in, allowing for deeper feelings for each of the characters.

One of the best things about the episode is that it feels like it has returned the series back to its roots, with the emphasis on Barry and Iris’ relationship, rather than just their hero and villain storylines. It feels like the team has regained the momentum that made the show a hit in the first place, by returning to the emotional core that made the show successful.

The writing is so well-balanced, it never overstays its welcome and as always executes its storylines with a combination of humor, heart, and pathos. Every character is given their plot while keeping the tone of the show even during the most serious of moments. But what stands out most is the fresh start the show receives, a fresh start everything including the audience was yearning for.

At the end of the episode, there is an insatiable hunger to know more, what’s next and this sets the stage for an excellent season. The episode is a great teaser for what’s next in store for The Flash and provides a solid foundation for the themes and conditions that the storylines will explore.

Overall, The Flash season 6, episode 1 “Into the Void” is a phenomenal start to the season. It hits you emotionally while stimulating one's intellectual capacities. It’s the perfect blend of fast-paced action, heartfelt emotion, and intelligent writing. The episode hits all the right notes making it an enjoyable watch for viewers of all ages.
