Beverly Goldberg, a Jewish mother of three, is navigating the ups and downs of parenting in the 1980s. In season 5 episode 17 of The Goldbergs, titled "Colors", Barry, the eldest Goldberg child, decides to become a member of the JTP (Jenkintown Posse), a group of cool kids who wear the same varsity jackets and loiter in the school parking lot.

Barry is so excited about being part of the JTP, that he asks Adam, his younger brother and the narrator of the series, to film his initiation. Adam becomes the official documenter of all of the antics of the JTP and its members including Geoff Schwartz (the son of Beverly's nemesis, Virginia), Johnny Atkins (the school jock), Matt Bradley (the shy and awkward student), and Chad Kremp (the younger brother of Erica's best friend, Lexy). Adam's camera captures everything from Chad's hilarious attempts to gain acceptance into the JTP, to an ill-advised prank on the school janitor, Mr. Mellor (who also happens to be the father of Barry's girlfriend, Lainey).

As Barry becomes more and more consumed with impressing the JTP, he begins to neglect his own interests and his girlfriend Lainey. Meanwhile, Lainey starts to feel left out of Barry's new group of friends, and Erica, the eldest Goldberg child, tries to balance college applications with her self-discovery journey. Murray, the patriarch of the Goldberg family, is also dealing with his own insecurities about his job and tries to impress his boss by getting a new office tape dispenser.

The episode explores themes of identity, belonging, and growing up in a humorous and heartwarming way. The show is known for its use of classic 80s references, from the fashion to the music, to create a nostalgic feel for viewers who grew up during that time period. However, the show's themes are universal and give audiences of all ages something to relate to.

In "Colors", the Goldbergs face new challenges as they navigate their way through adolescence and adulthood, but they do it with the same humor, warmth, and love that makes viewers return to the show week after week. With a talented cast and a talented creative team behind the scenes, The Goldbergs proves that family sitcoms are still relevant and can be just as entertaining in the 21st century as they were in the 1980s.
