Ep 5. Japan: South to Kyoto

In season 1 episode 5 of The Hairy Bikers' Asian Adventure, entitled "Japan: South to Kyoto," the motorcycle-riding culinary duo continues their exploration of Japan's food and culture. Beginning in the bustling city of Osaka, Dave and Si take a leisurely boat ride along the Yodo River, enjoying some sake and snacks as they go. They also sample some of the local fare, including a fish dish cooked with Japanese sake and a traditional confection made with sweet potato.
As they travel towards Kyoto, the Hairy Bikers learn about the history and significance of the ancient city, including its importance as a center of tea ceremony and Zen Buddhism. Along the way, they visit a soy sauce factory and see how the famous condiment is made using traditional methods. They also stop in at a market to pick up ingredients for a meal they will prepare later in the episode.
Once in Kyoto, Dave and Si visit a traditional Japanese inn, or ryokan, where they are welcomed with a tea ceremony and enjoy a luxurious meal featuring local delicacies such as grilled eel, tofu, and wagyu beef. They also take a dip in the inn's onsen, or natural hot springs, for a relaxing soak.
The Hairy Bikers then explore some of Kyoto's iconic landmarks, including the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its thousands of bright orange torii gates, and the Zen temple complex of Daitokuji, where they meet a monk who teaches them about meditation and serves them a simple vegetarian meal.
Back in their kitchen, Dave and Si prepare a multicourse meal utilizing the ingredients they picked up at the market earlier. The dishes include a refreshing chilled tomato and cucumber soup, a savory stir-fry of beef and vegetables, and a sweet and creamy dessert made with soy milk and strawberries.
Throughout the episode, the Hairy Bikers showcase the diversity and richness of Japanese cuisine and culture, while also highlighting the beauty and history of Kyoto. Viewers can follow along as they immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and flavors of this fascinating country.
