The Investigator: A British Crime Story is a gripping true crime documentary series from ITV that follows the work of former police detective Mark Williams-Thomas as he investigates unsolved and unresolved cases of homicide and disappearances in the United Kingdom. Spanning across two seasons, the series chronicles his meticulous efforts to uncover long-buried truths, unmask perpetrators, and bring justice to the victims' families.

The first season, which aired in 2016, primarily focuses on the case of Carole Packman, a wife, and mother who vanished without a trace from her home in Bournemouth in 1985. Her husband, Russell Causley, was eventually convicted for her murder, but her body has never been found. For over 30 years, Carole's family had been desperately searching for answers, and Williams-Thomas was determined to help them. With the help of modern forensic technology and testimonies from friends and family members, Williams-Thomas attempts to reconstruct the events leading up to Carole's disappearance and unravel the web of lies and deceit surrounding her relationship with Causley.

The second season, which aired in 2018, shifts its focus to the case of Louise Kay, a 1988 disappearance case that was never solved. At just 18-years-old, Louise disappeared without a trace in Eastbourne, Sussex, leaving her family devastated and struggling to come to grips with their loss. Williams-Thomas takes on this cold case to try to discover what happened to Louise after all these years. He combs through archives, interviews witnesses, and retraces her steps to piece together what happened that evening. His investigation leads him down a rabbit hole of events and people connected to Louise who may hold valuable information about what the teenager was doing in the hours leading up to her disappearance.

The Investigator: A British Crime Story is a thought-provoking series that pulls back the curtains on the painstaking work that goes into solving cold cases in the UK. Williams-Thomas' dogged persistence is evident as he conducts interviews and follows leads to uncover key evidence. The series shows how much of an impact the work of one individual can have on the lives of those affected by tragedy. The show highlights how the police and detectives work tirelessly despite the challenges they face in trying to solve difficult murders and disappearances.

The show benefits from Williams-Thomas' previous experiences as a police detective and investigative journalist. He's able to analyze cold cases in a different light, pointing out details others may have overlooked but prove crucial to solving the case. Williams-Thomas' approach is thorough and has proven to be effective in the past, as he played a crucial role in bringing Jimmy Savile's crimes to the public's attention back in 2012.

Overall, The Investigator: A British Crime Story is an excellent documentary series that highlights the importance of not giving up on cold cases. With two compelling seasons that showcase the impact one person can have on re-opening and solving murders and disappearances, the show is a must-watch for true crime enthusiasts. With twists and turns along the way, viewers will be wondering until the very end how the mysteries will be solved. It's a thoroughly enjoyable series that offers a glimpse into the hard work that goes into bringing justice to victims and their families.
