Ep 4. Monkee Mayor

  • October 2, 1967

The Monkees season 2 episode 4, Monkee Mayor, follows the hilarious misadventures of the iconic band as they find themselves unwittingly involved in local politics when their friend, Wilbur, runs for mayor. The episode begins with Wilbur, a kind-hearted but bumbling inventor, attempting to fix a broken stoplight in their neighborhood. While tinkering with the wires, Wilbur accidentally creates a short circuit and causes chaos on the busy street.

The Monkees happen to be passing by and offer to help, but soon find themselves embroiled in Wilbur's mayoral campaign. He enlists their help to design posters and flyers, write speeches, and even perform at rallies. The Monkees, not knowing much about politics, are initially hesitant to get involved but eventually agree to help their friend.

As they dive deeper into the world of politics, The Monkees quickly realize that nothing is as straightforward as it seems. They witness firsthand the dirty tactics used by Wilbur's opponents, including a rival candidate who tries to bribe them with promises of fame and fortune. The band members soon discover that politics can be just as cutthroat as the music industry.

Meanwhile, Wilbur proves to be an ineffective candidate, often getting tongue-tied during speeches and failing to connect with potential voters. The Monkees try their best to provide moral support and come up with creative ways to drum up support for their friend, but the odds seem to be stacked against them.

Despite the setbacks, The Monkees refuse to give up. They organize a massive rally and concert just days before the election, hoping to sway undecided voters. The event is a huge success, with thousands of people showing up to watch the band perform. However, things take a turn for the worse when a group of protesters show up and start causing trouble.

In the chaos that ensues, Wilbur is kidnapped by the rival candidate's team and held hostage. The Monkees must race against time to rescue their friend and bring the culprits to justice. With their ingenuity and quick thinking, they are able to save Wilbur and expose the corruption within the political system.

As the episode draws to a close, Wilbur loses the mayoral election but gains a newfound respect for The Monkees and their willingness to stand up for what is right. The band members themselves learn a valuable lesson about the importance of civic engagement and the power of political action. In the end, they may not have won the election, but they come away from the experience with a deeper understanding of the political process and a renewed sense of purpose.
