The Partridge Family is a show about a mom and her kids who form a musical group as a means of staying together while earning money. Shirley Partridge is a widow with five children of varying ages. Keith is the oldest and performs most of the groups lead vocals. Laurie is the second oldest and contributes to the group by playing piano and keyboard. Danny is the middle child at ten, who plays bass guitar. Chris is the youngest boy and he plays drums while Tracy, as both the youngest girl and youngest member of the family, plays tambourine. The group also has an agent named Mr. Kincaid who often becomes the butt of many pranks pulled by Danny. Each member of the family has their own personality which adds to the story content for each episode. Most stories revolve around the older children with Keith and Laurie often having romantic interests. Keith is a classic teenage boy sensation and is often hounded by young teenage girls who dream of dating him. Keith and Laurie both attend the same high school so some of the stories revolve around activities in school. Danny is definitely the troublemaker in the family who often talks Keith into following his plans even though they usually turn out badly. Danny is also very smart and does all of the negotiations with Mr. Kincaid. He also keeps track of the family's finances. Some other characters who show up from time to time include Shirley's parents. The family has to travel quite a bit for the shows they put on. In order to accommodate all the members of the family and their instruments, Shirley buys a retired school bus. The kids get busy transforming it by painting the outside a variety of different colors in geometric squares, which becomes the trademark symbol for the group. The matching outfits they wear when performing on stage have also become a trademark for the Partridge Family.

Shirley's memories of a high school romance are stirred when Navy Capt. Charles Corwin arrives in town. She sees the Captain's picture in the newspaper and recognizes him as "Cuddles," an old flame. When Keith and Danny overhear part of a phone conversation, they think Capt. Corwin has a girl in every port, and their mother will get hurt.

Danny finds a brooch and gives it to his mother for her birthday. He is dismayed when he sees a newspaper ad offering a $50-reward for it's return -- from his school teacher, Mrs Bullock! Danny then involves Keith and Laurie in an ill-fated plan to get the brooch back from their mother without Shirley's knowledge, and buy her a duplicate with part of the reward money.

Scheduled to appear at a rally for energy conservation, the Partridge Family is chagrined when Danny's guitar blows all the fuses in the auditorium. To make amends they decide to be the "model" family, showing everyone how easy it is to cut down the use of electricity. But Danny's miscalculation has the family living with no power for the final day of the month.
