Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen Season 3 Episode 2 Janine vs. Michael

  • October 30, 2013

In Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen season 3 episode 2, two chefs face off in a battle to avoid elimination. Janine, who was eliminated in the previous episode, is given a chance to come back into the competition by facing off against Michael, who was eliminated earlier in the season.

The episode starts off with the two chefs entering the Last Chance Kitchen, where they are greeted by judge Tom Colicchio. Tom informs them that they will be cooking with leftover ingredients from the previous episode, which includes chicken, potatoes, and parsnips. The chefs have 30 minutes to prepare a dish that will impress the judges and keep them in the competition.

Janine decides to make a roasted chicken thigh with a parsnip and potato puree, while Michael decides to make a chicken and potato stew. Both chefs work quickly, trying to make the most of the limited ingredients they have. Janine runs into some trouble when her chicken starts to burn, but she is able to salvage the dish by removing the burnt skin.

With only a few minutes left on the clock, the judges taste the dishes. Tom notes that Janine's chicken is slightly overcooked, but he likes the flavor of the puree. He also notes that Michael's stew is a bit too heavy on the potato, but he likes the overall flavor. The judges deliberate and ultimately decide that Janine's dish is the better of the two, and she is declared the winner of the challenge.

However, the episode is not over yet. Because Janine has won, she is given another challenge to compete in. This time, she will be facing off against another eliminated chef from an earlier episode. Janine's opponent is revealed to be Tanya, who was eliminated in the first episode of the season.

The two chefs are given the same set of ingredients as before – chicken, potatoes, and parsnips – but this time they have only 20 minutes to prepare their dishes. Janine decides to make a chicken and potato hash with a parsnip puree, while Tanya decides to make a chicken and parsnip stir fry with a potato side dish.

The clock ticks down as the two chefs race to finish their dishes. Janine has some trouble with the texture of her potato hash, but she is able to pull it together in the end. Meanwhile, Tanya's stir fry turns out to be too salty, but she doesn't have enough time to make any adjustments.

The judges taste the dishes and note that Janine's hash is a bit on the dry side, but they like the overall flavor. They also note that Tanya's stir fry is too heavily seasoned, but they like the presentation. After some deliberation, the judges declare Janine the winner of the challenge, and she earns herself another shot at competing in the main competition.

Overall, Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen season 3 episode 2 is a tense and exciting episode that showcases the talent of some of the best chefs in the competition. Despite being given an unusual set of ingredients to work with, both Janine and Michael are able to create impressive dishes that impress the judges. And even though Janine ultimately comes out on top, Tanya proves to be a formidable opponent in the second part of the challenge.
