DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunny Khan continue to investigate the cold case of David Walker's murder, whose remains were discovered in a suitcase at the bottom of a river. After identifying the victim and his girlfriend Tessa Nixon, the detectives explore the young couple's troubled relationship and the possibility of David's involvement in a gang.

They discover that Tessa's mother has recently died from dementia and that Tessa herself is exhibiting symptoms of the disease. Meanwhile, Richard, one of David's former gang members, is questioned and reveals that David had stolen from the gang and was planning to run away with Tessa. But Richard denies any involvement in the murder.

As the investigation progresses, the detectives discover that David and Tessa were in debt and had taken out loans from a dangerous loan shark named Quinn. They also find out that David had applied for a job at a wealthy businessman's home, which provides a potential motive for the murder.

Meanwhile, Cassie's father has a heart attack, causing her to confront her complicated relationship with her family. Sunny offers her support and the two of them begin to navigate their own personal lives, with Sunny opening up about his own family problems.

As the team begins to put the pieces together, they discover an unforeseen connection between the victim and a member of the public. However, as they close in on a suspect, events take an unexpected turn, casting doubt on everything they thought they knew about the case.
