Walking with Dinosaurs Season 0 Episode 1 Search for the Giant Claw

  • December 30, 2002

A prehistorical world full of lush forests, vast deserts and towering mountains is the setting for the first episode of Walking with Dinosaurs. The episode named "Search for the Giant Claw" takes viewers on a journey back in time to the Late Jurassic period, approximately 149 million years ago.

The story centers around a herd of Diplodocus, massive herbivorous dinosaurs with long necks and tails. As the episode begins, the Diplodocus are living peacefully in a forest when they are suddenly attacked by a pack of Allosaurus, carnivorous predators with sharp teeth and powerful jaws.

As the Diplodocus flee, the camera follows two stragglers: a mother and her young calf. As they journey through the forest, they encounter a diverse range of other prehistoric creatures, including the armored Stegosaurus and the swift Coelophysis.

While searching for a safe place to rest, the mother and calf stumble upon a huge nest filled with eggs. The eggs are massive, much larger than any they have seen before. They realize that they have stumbled upon the nesting ground of a mysterious creature that they have never encountered before.

Determined to investigate, the mother and calf venture deeper into the forest. Along the way, they encounter a pair of Compsognathus, small carnivorous dinosaurs that are often preyed upon by larger animals. These fast-moving creatures provide an opportunity for the Diplodocus to outrun the Allosaurus.

The mother and calf eventually reach a cliff overlooking a vast plain. In the distance, they see a massive creature with claws so large that they extend beyond its body. This is the creature that they have been searching for: a giant theropod, a massive carnivore that easily dwarfs the Allosaurus.

As they watch, the giant theropod engages in a fierce battle with a rival. The Diplodocus are stunned by the ferocity of the fight, as the two creatures exchange blows and bites. In the end, the giant theropod emerges victorious.

Though the mother and calf are awed by the giant theropod, they realize that it is too dangerous to get any closer. They retreat to the safety of the forest, where they are reunited with the rest of their herd.

As the episode ends, the narrator reminds viewers that while the Diplodocus and other prehistoric creatures may have disappeared long ago, their legacy lives on in the animals living today. He encourages viewers to explore the world around them and appreciate the diversity and majesty of the natural world.

Walking with Dinosaurs captivates viewers with stunningly realistic computer-generated imagery and a wealth of scientific information and has been praised for its unique blend of entertainment and education. "Search for the Giant Claw" is a thrilling introduction to the show's exploration of prehistoric life and sets the stage for the episodes to come.
