Practical Magic is a comedy-drama that stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. It was released in 1998. The movie tells the story of a witch who was exiled to a small island of the coast of Massachusetts. The witch believed that falling in love was the source of her trouble so she cast a spell on herself to make sure that she would never fall in love in again. Centuries later, the curse of being unable to fall in love still is on her family.

Gillian and Sally Owens are descendants of this original witch. Both of them have been made off their entire lives for having the powers of witchcraft. Gillian decides that she wants to experience love so she casts a spell to make herself fall in love, while Sally decides to keep protecting herself. Sally's aunts, who are witches too, decide that Sally needs to experience love so they cast a spell on her to make her fall in love, overriding her original spell. Sally ends up falling in love with a man and having two daughters with him. The man is killed in a car accident and Sally is devastated. She decides that magic will have no place in her life and she decides to never perform spells again. She also decides that she will not teach her daughters about magic.

Meanwhile, Gillian is falling in love with a man in California. When she hears about Sally, she drags her man, Jimmy, back with her to help her sister. Jimmy ends up becoming abusive to the sisters so Sally puts poison in his drink, killing him. An investigator arrives from Arizona searching for Jimmy. The sisters perform as many spells as possible to try and trick the investigator from going away but they have no luck. Pretty soon, Sally realizes that she is falling in love with the investigator and they began a relationship. She realizes that she is falling in love because of her former spell. Sally does not believe that the love between her and the investigator is real and she tells him to leave. In the meantime, Jimmy's spirit is possessing Gillian. Sally realizes that the only way to save her sister is to convene a cove of nine witches. Sally realizes she must practice her magic skills in order to save her sister. The exorcism is successful and the town embraces the witches. The investigator also returns to tell Sally she is cleared of any wrongdoing in Jimmy's death and they fall in love.
