In season 13 episode 17 of Ask This Old House, the team tackles two projects - repairing a broken sash cord window and planting bulbs.

The episode starts with Host Kevin O'Connor visiting a historic home in Boston to help a homeowner repair a broken sash cord window. He meets with general contractor Tom Silva, who explains the process of repairing the window by replacing the sash cord, which helps the window slide up and down. Tom demonstrates how to remove the old sash cord and tie a new one using a knot that won't slip or loosen over time. He also shows how to use a weight to balance the window and make it easy to operate. Kevin and Tom discuss how to identify different types of sash cords and how to measure the length needed for replacement. The homeowner is pleased to have a functional window again that still retains its original historic character.

Next, Kevin travels to Minneapolis to meet with landscape contractor Roger Cook and help a homeowner plant bulbs in her garden. Roger recommends planting bulbs in the fall before the ground freezes to allow them to develop strong roots. He demonstrates how to dig holes for the bulbs using a bulb planter, and how to add compost or bone meal to the soil for growth. Roger advises choosing bulbs based on the desired bloom time and how well suited they are to the climate and soil conditions. He also shares tips for spacing and arranging bulbs in groups or clusters to create a more visually appealing display. The homeowner is excited to see how her garden will bloom next spring.

Back in the workshop, Kevin and Tom answer a viewer question about how to repair cracks in a concrete slab using a Urethane injection kit. They demonstrate how to clean and seal the crack, then inject the Urethane into the crack to fill it completely and prevent water from seeping in. They also explain how to use a caulk gun to apply the Urethane, and how to sand the surface once it dries to create a smooth finish.

Finally, plumber Richard Trethewey visits a homeowner in Rhode Island who is struggling with a showerhead that is too low for comfort. Richard shows how to install a new adjustable showerhead that can be raised or lowered to the desired height. He explains how to remove the old showerhead, clean and tape the threads, and install the new showerhead using an adjustable wrench. The homeowner is grateful for the simple solution that makes her shower more enjoyable.

Overall, this episode offers helpful tips and step-by-step instructions for home repairs and gardening projects, providing useful information for both novice and experienced DIYers.
