Ep 11. When Hayden Met Christine

  • December 11, 1990

When Hayden Met Christine is the eleventh episode of the third season of the American sitcom Coach. The episode revolves around Hayden Fox, the head coach of a college football team, meeting a woman named Christine Armstrong at a restaurant. Despite having a great time with her, Hayden is hesitant to pursue a relationship with Christine due to his past experiences with women. Meanwhile, Luther and Dauber, assistant coaches on the football team, are preparing for an upcoming championship game against their rival team.

The episode opens with Hayden having dinner alone at a restaurant where he strikes up a conversation with the waitress, Christine (played by Shelley Fabares). The two hit it off immediately and end up spending the rest of the evening together. As they part ways, Hayden seems smitten with Christine but is hesitant to ask for her phone number.

Back at the football field, Luther and Dauber are prepping the team for the championship game against their rivals. However, they are constantly bickering with each other over minor details which begins to frustrate the players. Hayden, who is usually able to keep them in line, is still preoccupied with thoughts of Christine.

Later, at the restaurant where they first met, Hayden bursts into the kitchen and asks Christine out on a date. They make plans to go to a jazz club that weekend. However, as the date approaches, Hayden begins to have doubts about whether or not he's ready for a serious relationship. He seeks advice from various people, including his ex-wife and Luther, but ultimately decides to go through with the date.

During the date, Christine reveals to Hayden that she used to be married to a famous rock star. Hayden is intimidated by her past and begins to feel insecure. However, Christine assures him that she is interested in him and not his football coaching fame or money. They have a great time together and eventually end up back at Christine's apartment.

The next morning, Hayden wakes up in Christine's bed and begins to panic. He's afraid that if he gets too involved with her, he'll end up getting hurt. Christine senses his anxiety and tries to reassure him, but Hayden decides to end things with her.

Meanwhile, Luther and Dauber are still prepping the team for the championship game. However, they are so focused on their own squabbling that they neglect to prepare the team properly. As a result, the team ends up losing the game.

At the end of the episode, Hayden is back at the restaurant where he first met Christine. He tells her that he's sorry for ending things abruptly and that he's realized he wants to be with her. Christine forgives him and they decide to start their relationship anew.

Overall, When Hayden Met Christine is a light-hearted episode that explores the complexities of starting a new romantic relationship. The juxtaposition of Hayden's personal life with the championship football game creates a sense of balance in the episode, keeping the storylines engaging and entertaining. Fans of the show will enjoy this episode's humor and relatable themes.
