Inu X Boku Secret Service is a slice-of-life anime series that revolves around a young lady named Ririchiyo Shirakiin and her Secret Service agent, Soushi Miketsukami. Ririchiyo moves into the Ayakashi Kan apartment complex in order to be alone while she figures out how to properly interact with other people. Since the complex serves the dual purpose of offering protection and companionship to those who live there, the other characters completely ignore her motives and quickly integrate themselves into her daily life.

Youkai (Japanese spirits) are an integral part of the story and the characters' lives since they all have a youkai ancestor and can channel that particular avatar. Their half-youkai blood calls to malevolent full-blooded youkai, and the anime offers lighter elements of humor and action as their transformations shock humans and they battle the youkai. However, darker elements are present as their powers single them out for the honor, respect, even worship of their full-blooded human family members--but rarely their love. The anime offers deeper insight into the characters' motivations and personalities and uses Ayakashi Kan as a fortress of both physical and emotional protection for its inhabitants.

Ririchiyo's journey to become more honest serves as counterpoint to the fun and games that are integral to the story. Her lazy friend Sorinozuka, lesbian-vibing Yukinokouji, seeming space-case Karuta, pseudo-punk Watanuki, smiling sadist Natsume, and the other staff of the apartment complex conspire to pull her into hilarious and often awkward situations that slowly show her the power of true friendship. Her heart starts to open as she tries to understand Secret Service agent Miketsukami, who is equal parts fawning (constantly praising everything about her) and self-deprecating (referring to himself as her dog). Along the way, viewers get beautifully drawn characters, lots of fanservice, and ending theme songs by the various characters that highlight their personalities, their relationships with others, and their private lives. Inu X Boku Secret Service is part suspense, part poignancy, and entirely hilarious.
