The telvision mini series Moby Dick is an adaptation of the Herman Melville novel considered by many to be the greatest American novel ever written; the mini series was produced as a co-production between German and U.S. production companies for the Encore cable channel in the U.S. The mini series does not follow the plot and characters of the book faithfully, instead the television version adds characters to establish the motivations behind the onsession of Captain Ahab, played by William Hurt. A two episode mini series lasting 180 minutes in total stars a number of well respected American actors, including Gillian Anderson as Ahab's wife Elizabeth and Ethan Hawke as first mate Starbuck.

Much like the novel Moby Dick opens with a narration from the shipwrecked Ishmael who explains he had joined the crew of Captain Ahab's whaling ship the Pequod at the beginning of its last ill fated voyage. In 1850 Nantucket Captain Ahab is shown living a comfortable, affluent lifestyle with his wife Elizabeth; despite the protests of his wife and preacher Ahab begins to plan a final whaling trip to find the legendary white whale, Moby Dick. Ahab's motives for the final voyage are shown to be gaining revenge on the whale for taking the lower portion of his right leg during a previous encounter.

Once the journey begins the crew are told to ignore encounters with other whales; months pass by and the crew begin to suffer from dehydration and starvation until thery finally encounter Moby Dick. A prolonged chase by members of the crew led by Ahab to capture Moby Dick begins costing the lives of many of the crew; of the three boats launched to capture the whale two are sunk leaving only Ahab's boat. The whaling ship Pequod is also damaged and begins to sink as Capatain Ahab becomes tangled in a harpoon line attached to the whale and is dragged to his death.
