Ep 49. 2015 Volkswagen Golf R & 2015 Jeep Renegade

  • August 18, 2015

In this episode of Motorweek, we dive into two very different vehicles - the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R and the 2015 Jeep Renegade.

First up, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R. This hot hatch is a step up from the already impressive Golf GTI, boasting more power, better handling, and a sleeker design. Under the hood, the Golf R features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces a whopping 292 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. This power is channeled through either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic with paddle shifters. The Golf R's all-wheel drive system is also a standout feature, providing excellent grip and stability in all driving situations.

On the outside, the Golf R is visually similar to the GTI, but with a few key differences. The R model features more aggressive front and rear bumpers, larger air intakes, and quad exhaust tips. Inside, the Golf R features a sporty interior with supportive bucket seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and plenty of tech features. The Golf R's infotainment system is user-friendly and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

In terms of performance, the Golf R is simply impressive. It accelerates quickly and handles corners with ease, thanks to its advanced all-wheel drive system. The Golf R is also surprisingly comfortable and refined for a performance-oriented vehicle. It's not the most fuel-efficient vehicle on the market, but it's not terrible either, averaging around 24 mpg combined.

Next, we take a look at the 2015 Jeep Renegade. This subcompact crossover is marketed as a rugged and capable SUV for the city and beyond. The Renegade features a unique design with boxy styling, round headlights, and a distinctive seven-slot grille. It's available in several trim levels, including the base Sport, the Latitude, the Limited, and the Trailhawk.

Under the hood, the Renegade offers two engine choices. The base engine is a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The optional engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a six-speed manual transmission or a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available on all trims.

On the inside, the Renegade's interior is functional and well-designed. The dashboard features an intuitive layout and materials feel sturdy. The Renegade's infotainment system is also easy to use and features available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

So how does the Renegade perform on the road? Surprisingly well, actually. The Renegade offers nimble handling and a comfortable ride, although some road noise can be heard in the cabin. The optional all-wheel drive system is capable of handling light off-roading situations, making the Renegade a more capable vehicle than its subcompact size would suggest.

Overall, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R and 2015 Jeep Renegade are two very different vehicles, but both offer impressive performance and capabilities within their respective segments. Tune in to this episode of Motorweek for a closer look at both of these exciting rides.
