Each episode begins with a creative and difficult challenge that each designer must complete. Previous challenges have tasked designers to create dresses out of party supplies, food and recycled paper. Other challenges required the designers to make new looks out of old wedding dresses or to create an outfit for a doll. Many episodes feature a mid-episode twist, forcing the contestants to create an additional look or deal with some unexpected obstacle. These challenges must usually be finished within a short time frame. Through it all, the warm and friendly Tim Gunn guides each contestant through the pitfalls of high-paced fashion design.
After the looks are finished, the contestants must present their designs to a panel of judges. Model after model struts up and down the catwalk to show off each designer's look. The designers must then face the tough panel of judges. This is when the real drama starts and the tears begin to flow. The competitors must listen as their work is scrutinized, criticized and sometimes praised by industry experts. Finally, the judges will speak amongst themselves and pick a winner and a loser for that episode. The winner often receives immunity for the next challenge and the loser is sent home.
After the field of contestants dwindles, one last challenge selects three or four designers. These designers will be given a chance to show a complete collection at a major fashion show. The selected contestants go home for several weeks to create a dozen or so different fashions. After Tim Gunn checks in with each contestant, the competitors travel to the runway show to present their final collection. Many of these contestants have never had the opportunity to display their designs in a professional runway show. This is a special moment that some may never experience again.
After the final fashion show, the designers must face the judging panel once more. Once each collection has been scrutinized, the judges crown the season's winner. The winner takes the prize and attempts to make a name in the fashion world.

Project Runway News
Some divorces you see coming (see: Kim Kardashian). Others sort of blindside you and make you wonder what the heck was going on behind the scenes. Rumors that Heidi Klum and Seal are divorcing came as a shock to many early this morning... could it really be true?
In a recent appearance on "The View," Gaga had some things to say about "Project Runway" mentor Timm Gunn, after he bashed Hillary Clinton. "He's being a bully. I think Hillary Clinton has more important things to think about than her hemline," she said.
Usually when one thinks of Jessica Simpson and her questions of whether tuna fish is chicken, the word "mentor" doesn't immediately come to mind. But NBC begs to differ. The network has tapped Simpson to act as a mentor to competitors in the upcoming reality show "Fashion Star." The competition show, which will be hosted by Elle MacPherson, will feature 14 competitors as they create clothing in the hopes of winning a million bucks and a shot at their own fashion label.
"Project Runway" has been on for so many years now, and gone through so many changes in management, that it's going to take a serious shot in the arm to get it back out to the huge mainstream success it once was. Wait, Heidi Klum is posing nude to promote it? Well done and done I'd say.
Can't get enough "Project Runway" to feed your fashion competition habit? You won't have to rely only on Lifetime anymore: NBC has bought a 10-episode run of Ben Silverman's competition show "Fashion Star." Silverman, who was previously the head of programming at NBC, developed the show with his new production company Electus. The show will be similar in format to "Project Runway," and each week contestants will create outfits and put them up for judging.
Project Runway’s fashion guru Tim Gunn has some strong ideas about what will NOT happen during next season’s show. Tim recently spoke about what he sees for the future of the show and is explicit that it won’t include badly behaved stars from MTV or other channels. Typically, show producers will pull in other popular actors or ‘pop icons’ from the time to draw a bigger audience for the show.
