The Rabbit Hole is the first episode of 11.22.63 season 1, a science fiction television series based on the novel by Stephen King. The episode is about an English teacher named Jake Epping, who discovers a time portal that takes him back to 1960. The portal is located in the back of a diner in Maine, and it's operated by the owner, Al Templeton. Al has been using the portal to travel back in time and prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but he's dying of cancer and unable to continue his mission.

Al enlists Jake to finish his work, and he explains the rules of time travel. Any changes made in the past have unexpected and often disastrous consequences in the present. Jake must also stay in the past until the day of the assassination, which is November 22, 1963. He's given a fake ID and a cover story, and he's warned not to get too attached to anyone while he's there.

Jake agrees to take on the mission, and he steps through the portal into a different world. The first thing he notices is the music playing on the radio. It's old-fashioned to him but new to the people around him. The cars, the clothes, and the language are all different too. He eventually makes his way to Dallas, Texas, where he plans to live for three years until the day of the assassination.

Jake gets a job as a high school teacher and rents a room from an eccentric landlady named Miz Mimi. He also meets a young woman named Sadie, who's the librarian at his school. They strike up a friendship that's put to the test when Jake has to protect her from an abusive ex-husband.

As Jake settles into his new life, he discovers that changing the past isn't as easy as he thought. He tries to prevent a murder he heard about by saving the victim, but it turns out the victim was a serial killer. The real victim is still alive and on the loose. Jake's actions have unintended consequences that he couldn't have foreseen.

Throughout the episode, there are hints that someone is onto Jake and his mission. He's followed by a man in a yellow cardigan who seems to be watching him and Sadie. The implication is that the past doesn't want to be changed and will do whatever it can to preserve itself.

The Rabbit Hole is a thrilling introduction to the world of 11.22.63. It's a well-paced episode that balances exposition, character development, and action. James Franco gives a strong performance as Jake, conveying his confusion, determination, and vulnerability. The supporting cast, including Sarah Gadon as Sadie and Chris Cooper as Al, are also superb. The episode sets up a compelling premise and lays the groundwork for future episodes. Viewers who enjoy time travel stories, alternate history, and Stephen King will find plenty to like in this episode.
