The episode begins with Heyes and Curry, also known as Smith and Jones, on the run from a posse. They stumble upon a small town where they discover that the local judge has been replaced by a corrupt and ruthless man named Avery, who uses his authority to extort money from the townspeople.

While trying to evade the posse, Heyes and Curry end up in a saloon where they overhear Avery and his henchmen discussing their latest scheme - to create a fake robbery and use it as an excuse to hang an innocent man and steal his land.
