Ep 4. Lights Out

The episode "Lights Out" of American Restoration follows the team at Rick's Restorations as they work to restore a vintage neon sign from the 1950s. The sign, originally from a bowling alley, features intricate glasswork and bright neon tubes, but has been damaged over the years and needs extensive repair.

To start the restoration process, the team carefully removes the sign from its frame and transports it back to the shop. They begin by dismantling the sign and assessing the extent of the damage. Many of the neon tubes are broken or have come loose from their housings, and the glass pieces have suffered chips and cracks as well.

After examining the sign, the team decides to replace the damaged neon tubing rather than attempting to repair it. They carefully shape each new tube by hand and fit them back into their housings. Meanwhile, the glass pieces are taken to a specialist for repair. The specialist uses a technique called "frosting" to smooth out the chips and cracks, giving the glass a beautiful, uniform texture.

Once the neon and glass repairs are complete, the team reassembles the sign and carefully reattaches it to its frame. They then install new wiring and transformers to power the neon lights, and the sign is finally ready to be lit up.

The moment of truth arrives as the team flips the switch to turn on the sign. The neon tubes glow with a bright, vibrant light, and the glass pieces shimmer in the glow. Everyone is thrilled with the result, and the sign is now ready to be displayed in a new home.

In addition to following the restoration of the neon sign, this episode also features several smaller projects. The team restores a vintage popcorn machine from the 1940s, as well as a wooden telephone booth from the early 20th century.
