In the fourth episode of season two of Beat Bobby Flay, two Brooklyn-based chefs compete for the chance to take down culinary master Bobby Flay. Hosted by chef and Iron Chef America judge, Michael Symon, the episode, titled "Battle of Brooklyn," takes place in the culinary battleground that is Kitchen Stadium.
The first challenger, chef Anthony Mongeluzzi, is a seasoned restaurant owner with more than 20 years of experience in the food industry. He's challenged by the young and ambitious chef, Vincenzo Garofalo, who's determined to make a name for himself and his small catering business.
Chef Mongeluzzi has chosen to showcase his Italian roots with a dish he describes as a modern take on classic chicken parmigiana. He prepares a chicken breast that's been stuffed with prosciutto and fontina cheese, which is then breaded and fried. This is served on top of spaghetti with a roasted tomato sauce and accompanied by a side of pan-seared broccoli rabe.
Chef Garofalo opts for a dish that's inspired by his family's recipes. He's created a pan-seared halibut with lemon risotto and roasted fennel. The fish is topped with a pan sauce made from white wine, garlic, and lemon juice.
In the first round, both chefs are given 20 minutes to prepare their dishes. They have access to a pantry stocked with a variety of ingredients, including fresh produce, meats, and cheeses. Along with the judges, Michael Symon and chef Anne Burrell, an audience is present to watch the contestants in action.
After tasting and deliberating, the judges decide that chef Mongeluzzi's chicken parmigiana is the superior dish, and he advances to the next round. Chef Garofalo is not eliminated, however, as he has the opportunity to redeem himself in the second round.
In the second round, chef Mongeluzzi is required to prepare a dish using a secret ingredient chosen by the judges. This week, the ingredient is revealed to be honey. As a native Brooklynite, chef Mongeluzzi is confident in his ability to incorporate the ingredient into his dish. He decides to create a honey-glazed pork tenderloin with a side of roasted sweet potatoes and sautéed kale.
Chef Garofalo also must incorporate honey into his dish, and he chooses to make a honey-roasted duck breast with a honey-citrus glaze. This is served with a side of roasted root vegetables.
Both chefs present their dishes to the judges, who must decide which one is superior. After a tense moment of deliberation, the judges declare chef Mongeluzzi the winner, and he moves on to face Bobby Flay in the final round.
With only an hour to prepare his dish, chef Mongeluzzi must create a dish that beats the signature dish of Bobby Flay. The challenge, titled "Beat Bobby Flay," has seen many contestants fail to accomplish this goal, but chef Mongeluzzi is determined to emerge victorious.
For his dish, chef Mongeluzzi chooses to make a seared strip steak with a mushroom and red wine sauce. This is served with a side of roasted garlic mashed potatoes and glazed root vegetables.
Bobby Flay presents his signature dish, which is a Southwestern-style spice-rubbed pork chop with a smoky tomato chutney.
The judges have a difficult time choosing between the two dishes, and the final moment of the episode sees the reveal of the winner.
"Battle of Brooklyn" is a thrilling episode of Beat Bobby Flay that showcases the talents of two exceptional chefs. The competition is fierce, and the chefs are determined to come out on top. With expert judges and an engaged audience, this episode is a must-watch for any food lover.
