Best in Chow Season 2 Episode 15 Pizza Wars Regina

  • October 1, 2014

In this episode of Best in Chow, we explore the pizza scene in Regina, Saskatchewan. Known for being a hub of Canadian agriculture, Regina may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of traditional pizza destinations, but the locals are passionate about their pies.

First up on our tour is a classic joint known for its thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas. The owner takes a lot of pride in sourcing his ingredients locally, and it shows in the quality of the pies. From the tangy tomato sauce to the perfectly charred crust, everything about this pizza screams "authentic."

Next, we visit a newer establishment that's already making waves in the local foodie scene. Rather than sticking to traditional pizza toppings, this spot is all about experimentation. We try a pie topped with spicy pickled pineapple and grilled chicken, as well as a pizza featuring prosciutto and fig jam. The flavors are bold and unexpected but marry perfectly with the chewy crust and gooey cheese.

Our third stop is a little mom-and-pop shop that's been serving up pizza for decades. The interior is quaint and cozy, and the pies are simple but delicious. We try a margherita pizza with fresh basil and creamy mozzarella, as well as a meat-lover's pizza loaded with pepperoni, sausage, and bacon.

Last but not least, we visit a pizza truck that's been generating a lot of buzz online. The owner has a cult following thanks to his creative wood-fired pizzas, which take inspiration from all over the world. We sample a pizza with lamb gyro meat and tzatziki sauce, as well as a pizza topped with butter chicken and naan bread. The fusion flavors are unlike anything we've ever tasted, and we can see why people are willing to wait in line for hours to try this pizza.

At the end of the day, it's impossible to declare a "winner" among these four outstanding pizza joints. Each place had its own unique charm and flavor profile, and we walked away feeling lucky to have tried them all. Whether you're a Regina local or just passing through, these pizza spots are not to be missed.
