In season 8 episode 1 of Bizarre Foods America, host Andrew Zimmern heads to the city that never sleeps – Las Vegas. As he explores the unique culinary scene in Sin City, Zimmern introduces viewers to some of the most unusual foods and drinks Las Vegas has to offer.
The episode starts with Zimmern trying the infamous "heart attack grill" where diners over 350 pounds can eat free, but only if they wear hospital gowns while they gorge on burgers and fries. As he takes a bite into one of the restaurant's signature Quadruple Bypass Burgers, Zimmern gives viewers a rare glimpse into America's love affair with unhealthy foods.
Next, Zimmern meets up with Chef John Courtney at the Acacia Demonstration Gardens to forage for ingredients for unique cocktails. Courtney shows Zimmern how to pick and use prickly pear cactus to make a refreshing margarita, and mesquite to flavor whiskey. Zimmern then heads to The Viejas Casino to try a few of Courtney's concoctions.
Zimmern ventures off the Strip to check out the Las Vegas' Chinatown. He visits Chubby Cattle, where customers can select their own ingredients to create hot pot soups. He learns about the different types of broth available and how to pick meat, vegetables, and spices to create the perfect soup. Zimmern also stops by 99 Ranch Market, a Chinese grocery store, where he samples a variety of preserved eggs, meats, and other Asian delicacies.
No trip to Las Vegas would be complete without a visit to one of the city's many buffets. Zimmern heads to the Wynn Buffet, where he gets a behind-the-scenes look at how the restaurant prepares food for the 5,000 diners that they serve daily. He tries several items on their extensive menu, including sushi, lobster mac and cheese, and a unique take on spaghetti and meatballs.
One of the most unique dining experiences in Las Vegas is eating at a restaurant inside a replica of the Eiffel Tower. Zimmern visits the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino to try some of their French-inspired dishes created by Chef Joho Patrick. He enjoys a classic onion soup, foie gras terrine, and a roasted chicken that's been marinated for 24 hours.
Finally, Zimmern heads to The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas to check out their secret pizza joint, which doesn't advertise its location but can be found by following the scent of fresh pizza dough. He samples several pizzas, including a traditional Margherita and an unusual white clam pizza that's won awards.
Throughout the episode, Zimmern offers commentary on the unique culinary culture in Las Vegas. He discusses how the city has become a hub for experimental cuisine and how chefs are always pushing the limits to create over-the-top dishes. He also highlights how Las Vegas has become a destination for foodies from around the world.
Overall, Bizarre Foods America season 8 episode 1 is a fascinating look at the unusual foods and drinks that Las Vegas has to offer. From hot pot soups to secret pizza joints, viewers will be amazed at the variety of cuisine the city has to offer.
