In this episode of Body Bizarre, viewers explore the story of individuals with rare and unusual skin conditions that have left them with bumps all over their body.
The episode begins in the USA, where we meet Jennifer, a woman who has been living with a condition called Epidermolytic Ichthyosis since birth. This genetic condition causes a thick, scaly layer of skin to form over her entire body, making it almost impossible for her to sweat and leading to a constant risk of overheating. Jennifer visits a dermatologist to find out how she can manage her condition before undertaking a huge challenge - running a marathon. We follow Jennifer’s journey as she battles with the heat and the obstacles posed by her skin condition to complete the race.
Next, we travel to Indonesia where we meet Fakih, a man with a rare condition called Neurofibromatosis type-1. This condition causes tumors to form on nerve pathways, and Fakih’s tumors have formed all over his body. The tumors have grown so large on Fakih’s face that they are beginning to affect his vision, and he has been struggling with feelings of isolation and depression due to his appearance. We follow Fakih as he seeks out a surgeon who may be able to remove the tumors and give him back his sight.
We then meet Adele, a Canadian woman with a condition called Cutis Verticis Gyrata. This condition causes her scalp to form ridges and folds that look like bumps, making her feel self-conscious and leading to bullying and teasing from others. We see Adele as she meets with a group of fellow sufferers of the condition to share stories and advice, before undergoing surgery to try and smooth out the bumps.
Finally, we travel to India where we meet Rajesh, a man with a condition called Gorlin Syndrome. This condition causes intense pain in the muscles and joints, as well as the formation of cysts and bumps all over the body. Rajesh has spent years visiting various doctors and seeking out treatments, but nothing has had a lasting effect on his condition. We see him as he visits a specialist clinic to undergo further testing and explore options for pain management.
Throughout the episode, viewers are introduced to a range of different conditions, each with its unique set of challenges. We see how these individuals are coping with their conditions, seeking out medical help, and finding ways to live their lives to the fullest. From marathon running to surgery, the episode shows how living with bumps all over the body can be difficult, but also how individuals can find hope and support within their communities.
