Broadway or Bust is a miniseries that airs on PBS. It follows a group of high schoolers who have dreams of making it big on the Broadway stage with their musical talents. The documentary's central focus is the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, which are held every year in New York City. For this documentary, over sixty kids were followed as they prepared for the competition and awards. The Awards allows the high schoolers to compete for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress. The winners receive college scholarships. Broadway or Bust shows the path that the students must take in order to get to the big Awards show in New York. The series starts with casting, showing all the various auditions that take place in regions across the country. Next, it shows the students who passed the auditions preparing for the big competition in New York. It shows them singing and dancing and rehearsing for hours on end. Finally, the series climaxes with the actual Awards show in New York where we see the winners being crowned. While at the Awards, the kids get to meet a lot of famous Broadway performers. They also have the opportunity to be judged by leading casting directors and Broadway producers. For many of the high-schoolers, this will be the first big exposure to professional theatre and is the first opportunity to get their name out there. Many of the performers stick around in order to offer the students advice on how to make it in the competitive musical theatre business. Broadway or Bust shows the normal drama and pressures of a typical high school student's life all amped by against the background of a major competition. The students struggle with school and friends and sports teams, all the typical experiences of a high school student. This is all contrasted against the competition which is really a very adult-oriented experience. Many of the students being profiled have been participating and competing in musical theatre since they were very young. Although they may still be young, there is a professional quality to them. Broadway or Bust is an intensive look at just how hard it is to make it on Broadway.
