As a voice-over reads a letter written by William Walker many years ago, the families are gathered around the dining table and the conversation is flowing easily. Sarah and Joe's son, Evan, is taken to the hospital, and the subsequent diagnosis changes the family's dynamic. Tommy steps up at Ojai Foods, and Kitty and Kevin prepare for the hearing concerning Ryan Lafferty's possible role in William's shadier dealings. Additionally, Kitty learns something of harmful origin about Robert.

The family members are gathered at Nora's house, joyfully reminiscing about William and their own childhood memories. Tommy is frustrated with Sarah, who is unwilling to give him full control of the family business. Butting heads with Holly, Tommy enlists Justin to put on a facade of unity. Evan starts experiencing extreme pain and is taken to the hospital. The diagnosis throws Joe and Sarah's expectations for Evan's future into a tailspin.

At Ojai, Tommy is struggling with the pressures of running the family business while dealing with familial responsibilities. Justin, eager to prove himself to Tommy, offers to help, but a reminder of Tommy's failed financial investments strikes a nerve with Tommy, and they both part ways at an impasse.

Robert and Kitty are faced with the prospect of testifying at a hearing meant to determine whether Ryan Lafferty is William's son. When Kitty learns something deeply unsettling about Robert, she's thrown into a tailspin and hesitates on whether to go through with the hearing.

Meanwhile, Nora deals with her married daughter Sarah's sudden return home to live with her, while juggling her own feelings of loss and loneliness after William's passing. Kevin struggles to connect with Scotty and begins to make up stories to distract him.

The Walker family finds themselves again coming together in a moment of crisis, as Evan is diagnosed and treated for a serious genetic condition. Unresolved tension leads much of the drama, and secrets bubble to the surface, giving rise to further family conflict. As the characters struggle with their individual demons and familial responsibilities, they come closer than ever to finding a sense of true family unity.
