Our home on Native Land is the ninth episode of Coroner season 4. This episode of Coroner follows the story of a young woman named Piper Cohen whose remains were found in an abandoned building in Toronto. It is up to Dr. Jenny Cooper, the coroner, to find out what happened to Piper and solve the mystery surrounding her death.
The episode begins with Dr. Cooper and her team doing an autopsy on Piper's remains. The initial autopsy reveals that Piper died of an overdose of fentanyl, but Dr. Cooper refuses to believe that Piper, who had a promising career and a loving family, would have willingly taken drugs. She decides to investigate further and meets with Piper's mother, who is distraught and determined to find out the truth about her daughter's death.
As Dr. Cooper digs deeper, she uncovers a dark world of drug trafficking and exploitation of Indigenous women who are forced into prostitution and subjected to violence and abuse. Piper was an activist who had been trying to raise awareness about the issue and had even created a website to help these women. But her activism had put her in danger, and she had become a target of the people who were profiting from the exploitation of others.
Dr. Cooper's investigation leads her to a group of Indigenous women who live on the street and are vulnerable to exploitation. She learns about the struggles these women face and the lack of support they receive from society. Through her interactions with these women, Dr. Cooper gains a new perspective on the issue and becomes even more determined to get justice for Piper and for the other women who are suffering.
Meanwhile, Dr. Cooper is also dealing with personal issues, as she struggles to come to terms with her son's decision to drop out of university and her own feelings of guilt about neglecting her family while she is immersed in her work. She must find a way to balance her personal life with her professional responsibilities and to heal the rifts that have formed in her relationships.
The episode is set against the backdrop of the land acknowledgment, a traditional Indigenous practice of acknowledging the land and the people who have lived on it for thousands of years. Dr. Cooper begins to realize the importance of this practice and starts to understand the deep connections between people and the land.
With powerful performances and a thought-provoking storyline, Our home on Native Land is a poignant and emotional episode of Coroner that sheds light on an important issue that affects Indigenous communities across the country. Through her investigation, Dr. Cooper discovers the strength and resilience of the women she meets and learns that true justice can only be achieved by listening to their voices and addressing the root causes of their struggles.
