Countdown to Apocalypse is a six-part documentary that is produced and distributed by the History Channel and H2, More to History. H2 takes a close look at the prophecy that claims the world would end on December 21, 2012. They investigate the cultures and traditions that believe in end-of-the-world prophecies, such as the Mayan calendar and the wrath of Revelations from the Bible. H2 delves into the origin of such prophecies to understand where and why they began. In each episode scientists study the evidence and decipher if there are any facts that are relevant enough for a prophecy to be deemed true. The Mayan calendar is explained, and scientists discuss how accurate Mayan calendars really are. The belief that the most violent solar storm will occur due to a rare galactic alignment is also investigated. As people believe that the planet will meet its demise, H2 interviews people that are going to extremes in preparation for the end of the world. The Christian belief of the four horsemen of the apocalypse is dissected to see if there is any truth in in the four divine judgments that many people believe have already started on earth. The Hopi blue star is investigated, and experts debate the possibility of massive earthquakes, tsunamis and super-volcanoes destroying the earth. Nostradamus might have accurately predicted a number of events, but he was not the only prophet of doom to have correct predictions; H2 experts take a close look at the predictions of Edgar Cayce, Joseph Smith, St. Malachy and Sir Isaac Newton. Countdown to Apocalypse looks beyond this latest prediction and researches what Doomsday predictions are yet to come. Interviews are also conducted with everyday people that are going to extreme lengths to prepare for survival, just in case one of the end-of-the-world predictions comes true.
