Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Season 2018 Episode 27 Sandwiches, Southern and South of the Border
- September 28, 2018
In this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri takes viewers on a culinary journey across the southern and southwestern United States in search of the most delicious sandwiches and variations on classic Mexican cuisine. From a tiny roadside stand in Texas serving up homemade barbacoa to a family-owned deli in Atlanta with a cult following for their piled-high pastrami sandwiches, Guy samples a wide range of flavors and ingredients.
The first stop on Guy's sandwich tour is in Dallas, where he visits a local institution serving up classic Texas-style barbecue brisket sandwiches. The brisket is slow-smoked for 14 hours over oak and hickory wood, then sliced thin and piled high on a soft white roll with pickles, onions, and a tangy homemade barbecue sauce. Guy can't get enough of the smoky, tender beef and calls it a "life-changing sandwich."
Next, Guy heads to Atlanta to try one of the city's most beloved deli sandwiches at the General Muir. The deli's signature pastrami sandwich features hand-cut pastrami stacked high on rye bread with mustard and pickles. The meat is so tender and flavorful that Guy says he could eat it every day for the rest of his life.
Moving south to Houston, Guy visits a tiny roadside stand serving up authentic Mexican barbacoa, a dish made by slow-cooking meat in an underground pit. The stand's owner, Sonia, spends all night cooking beef and lamb and wrapping it in banana leaves before serving it to hungry customers in the morning. Guy can't believe the tenderness and flavor of the meat, which he says is "like nothing he's ever tasted before."
Finally, Guy heads west to Tucson, Arizona, to try a unique spin on traditional Mexican cuisine at El Charro Cafe. The restaurant's famous chimichanga is filled with shredded beef, cheese, and beans, then fried until crispy and served with guacamole and sour cream. Guy loves the crispy texture and rich flavors of the dish and declares it a "must-try."
Throughout the episode, Guy talks with the passionate chefs and owners behind each restaurant, learning about their culinary backgrounds and the stories behind their signature dishes. Viewers will be inspired to try new flavors and ingredients and appreciate the diversity of American cuisine.
