- March 8, 2019
In this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri takes us on a journey from the Southern United States to South America to explore the delicious and diverse cuisine of the region.
First, Guy visits a restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina that serves up Southern classics with a twist. The owner and head chef has combined traditional dishes like fried chicken and mac and cheese with Latin and Asian flavors to create unique and mouthwatering dishes. Guy tries the "Korean BBQ" chicken wings and the "Porkstrami" sandwich, both of which have become customer favorites.
Next, we head to Nashville, Tennessee to try some hot chicken and waffles. This restaurant puts their own spin on the classic Nashville dish by serving it with a homemade apple butter and drizzled with hot sauce. Guy also tries a Nashville-style hot fish sandwich, made with fresh catfish and topped with coleslaw and pickles.
Our journey then takes us to Miami, Florida, where Guy discovers a small family-owned restaurant that serves up authentic Cuban cuisine. The owner takes pride in using traditional recipes and cooking methods to ensure the dishes taste just like they would in Cuba. Guy tries the "ropa vieja," a shredded beef dish cooked in a tomato-based sauce, and the "lechon asado," a slow-roasted pork dish that is a staple in Cuban cuisine.
Finally, we head south of the border to Buenos Aires, Argentina to try some authentic Argentine cuisine. Guy visits a restaurant that specializes in "asado," a traditional barbecue-style cooking method that is popular in Argentina. He gets to try different cuts of meat cooked over open flames, including a tender and juicy "bife de chorizo" (sirloin steak) and a flavorful "matambre" (a thin cut of beef rolled with vegetables and cooked low and slow).
Throughout the episode, Guy not only gets to try some incredible food but also gets to meet the passionate and talented chefs behind the dishes. He learns about the history and cultural significance of each dish and gains a deeper appreciation for the diversity of Southern and South American cuisine.
Overall, this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is a flavorful journey that highlights the unique flavors and cooking techniques of the Southern and South American regions.
