  • August 21, 2020

In the latest episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri heads to Philadelphia to try some of the city's best comfort food. From classic sandwiches to unique twists on traditional dishes, Philly has a lot to offer.

The first stop on the tour is an iconic Philadelphia institution, Pat's King of Steaks. Known for their classic Philly cheesesteaks, Pat's has been serving up their famous sandwiches since 1930. Guy chats with the current owner, Frank Olivieri Jr., about the history of the restaurant and what makes their cheesesteaks so special. Frank also shares his personal tips for ordering the perfect sandwich. Guy can't resist trying one for himself and digs into a delicious cheesesteak with melted provolone and fried onions.

Next up, Guy visits Czerw's Kielbasy, a family-owned Polish deli that has been a staple in the Port Richmond neighborhood for over 80 years. Guy meets with owner Lenny Czerwinski to learn about the art of making traditional kielbasa sausage. Lenny takes Guy through the process, from grinding the meat to stuffing the casings, before grilling up some fresh kielbasa for Guy to try. Guy is impressed by the quality and flavor of the sausage and even takes some home to share with his family.

For the third stop on the Philly food tour, Guy heads to a funky little neighborhood joint called The Sidecar Bar & Grille. The owner, Adam Ritter, has created a menu that combines classic bar food with creative twists and unexpected flavor combinations. Guy tries the Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls, which are filled with shaved ribeye, fried onions, and American cheese and served with a sriracha ketchup dipping sauce. Guy is blown away by the delicious and unique dish.

The next stop takes Guy to Fishtown, where he visits a restaurant called Joe's Steaks + Soda Shop. Known for their classic milkshakes and crispy, thin-cut fries, Joe's also offers a variety of unique Philly cheesesteak options. Guy tries the "Whiz wit," which is a classic Philly cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz and fried onions, before trying a more adventurous option with spicy cherry pepper relish and sharp provolone. Joe's owner, Joe Groh, explains the importance of using high-quality ingredients and cooking the steak just right to achieve the perfect sandwich.

Finally, Guy heads to a cozy spot called Knead Bagels, where they are putting their own twist on the classic New York-style bagel. Using a special process that involves fermenting the dough for 48 hours, Knead creates a flavorful and chewy bagel that is then topped with unique flavor combinations like sriracha cream cheese and Everything Bagel seasoning. Guy tries the "Knead Lox," which is a house-cured salmon bagel sandwich with herb cream cheese and pickled onions. Guy is impressed by the quality and freshness of the ingredients and the deliciousness of the bagel itself.

Overall, Guy is blown away by the delicious food scene in Philly and the unique twists on classic comfort food that these restaurants are offering. From classic cheesesteaks to unique bagel sandwiches, Philly has something to offer any food lover.
