In the fifth episode of Durarara!!x2 season 1, titled "No One Knows What the Future Holds," the story shifts focus to some of the secondary characters in the show.
We start off with a scene of Shizuo and Celty having a conversation about their pasts. Shizuo admits that he used to be a very angry person, always seeking out fights and causing trouble. He tells Celty that he's grateful to her for being a calming influence in his life. Celty, meanwhile, reveals that she has very little memory of her life before she became a Dullahan. She's unsure of who she was or what happened to her, and it's clear that this is something that bothers her deeply.
From there, we move on to Anri, who's busy trying to make friends at school. She's not having much luck, though, and when she sees Mikado and Masaomi having a good time together, she feels left out. We get a glimpse into Anri's loneliness and insecurity, which adds some depth and sympathy to her character.
Meanwhile, Mikado and Masaomi are off having an adventure of their own. Masaomi takes Mikado to meet some of his old gang members, and they end up getting involved in a feud between two different groups. It's all very thrilling and dangerous, and you can see that Mikado is both intrigued and disturbed by this side of Masaomi's life.
Finally, we come to Izaya. He's always been a character that's difficult to pin down, and this episode does nothing to change that. We start off seeing him interacting with some of his clients, showing off his impressive networking skills. But then we see him alone in his apartment, acting strangely and speaking cryptically to himself. It's clear that there's more going on with Izaya than meets the eye, and the writers do a great job at hinting at his true motivations without giving too much away.
Overall, "No One Knows What the Future Holds" is a solid episode that deepens our understanding of the characters and sets up some interesting plot points for the future. While some may be disappointed that the main storyline involving the Dollars and the mystery of the slashed women doesn't move forward much in this episode, the character development here is strong enough to make up for it.
