Kate Reed is an attorney who is fed up with the traditional practice of law that seems to always put people at odds with each other. Her father runs a law firm, but Kate has opted to quit the practice of law and become a mediator. She is still dealing with the emotional fallout from her father and soon-to-be-step mother leaving her mother years earlier. Kate is called in to mediate a case involving a street performer who was attacked by a teenage boy while performing. She quickly finds that the case is not as easy to resolve as she had hoped. Meanwhile, her father asks her to come back to the firm to help settle a lawsuit involving a woman who has lodged a complaint against a company that makes a hair product that has caused her serious health issues.

Kate balances her role as a mediator and as a lawyer in her father's firm as she struggles to find where she truly belongs. Along the way, she relies on the help of her assistant, Leonardo, who has also recently suffered a loss in his personal life. The two of them work together to try and bridge the gap between the litigants and help both parties find a resolution that works for everyone involved.

In this first episode of Fairly Legal, viewers are introduced to the main characters and the basic premise of the show. Kate is a likable and relatable character who struggles to balance her personal and professional life. The case involving the street performer is a good example of the types of conflicts that Kate will need to mediate throughout the series. It also provides an opportunity to see Kate in action as she tries to bring the two parties together and help them find a way to move forward. The case involving the woman who has suffered health issues from a hair product provides an example of the types of cases Kate will be involved in as a lawyer at her father's firm.

One of the strengths of Fairly Legal is the focus on alternative methods of conflict resolution. Kate is a mediator, which means that she is trained to help people find common ground and reach a resolution that works for everyone involved. This is a refreshing change from the typical legal dramas that focus on courtroom drama and putting one party against the other. It also helps to set Fairly Legal apart from other legal dramas on television.

Another strength is the chemistry between the characters, particularly between Kate and Leonardo. Despite their differences in age and approach to life, the two characters share a bond and a mutual respect for each other. This friendship is an important aspect of the show and helps to ground the sometimes complicated legal and personal situations that the characters find themselves in.

Overall, the first episode of Fairly Legal sets up the series well and introduces viewers to the unique premise and characters. It also provides a good mix of legal drama and personal relationships that will keep viewers engaged throughout the series.
