Contrary to its subtitle, Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid is the third series offering from the Full Metal Panic! series of Japanese anime. The Second Raid is a 13 episode series that continues the series only a few months directly after the final events of the original series (which is simply titled Full Metal Panic!; the second series, known as Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu is a more comedic companion series to "FMP!"). The series continues its focus on the lives of the teenage military agent Sosuke Sagara of the Mithril organization and his proactive VIP classmate Kaname Chidori. FMP! The Second Raid takes its story from series creator Shoji Gatoh's original light novels titled "The End of Day by Day," and begin three months after Sosuke and Chidori's encounter with the Tuatha de Danaan (a ship) at the end of Full Metal Panic! Sosuke's organization, Mithril, learns that a secret organization has the equipment and capabilities to disrupt the frequently utilized ECS, or Electronic Conceal System. With this organization, calling itself "Amalgam," able to disrupt ECS, it is able to jeopardize many stealth infiltration missions by other entities, including those conducted by Mithril. How Amalgam was able to acquire this "Black Technology," is from contact and dealing with the various beings nicknamed the "Whispered." Whispered are humans that became noticed around the mid 1980's within the series and highly intelligent enough to possess extremely advanced knowledge of intricate systems like robotics, complex mathematics, and various other disciplines that come into play when designing such beyond-normal devices as the series' mechanical Arm Slaves, as well as the ECS. Due to the new threat of this Amalgam and its Black Technology, Sosuke's ongoing mission of protecting Chidori, who is also a a member of the Whispered "race," is terminated. Chidori is now overseen and protected by a Mithril agent known only as Wraith.
