In the eleventh episode of Gangland season 3, titled "To Torture or To Kill," viewers are taken on a harrowing journey into the world of the Mexican Mafia. The episode focuses on the brutal tactics used by this gang to maintain their power and control in the California prison system.

First, the episode takes a look at the history of the Mexican Mafia, also known as La Eme. Founded in 1957 at the Deuel Vocational Institute in California, the gang was initially formed as a way for Mexican-American prisoners to protect themselves from other gangs. However, it quickly became clear that the Mexican Mafia was not just about protection - it was about power.

Over the years, the Mexican Mafia has developed a reputation for being one of the most violent and ruthless prison gangs in the world. They control drug trafficking both inside and outside of prison walls, and they are known for their brutal tactics when dealing with those who cross them. One of these tactics is torture, which is the subject of this episode.

The Mexican Mafia uses torture as a way to enforce their rules and punish those who disobey them. One former member of the gang, who is now in witness protection, describes how they would "get creative" with their torture methods. They would use electric shock, boiling water, and even acid to inflict pain on their victims. According to the former member, the goal was not just to inflict pain - it was to send a message to anyone who might think about crossing the Mexican Mafia.

One of the most interesting aspects of this episode is the way it explores the psychology of the Mexican Mafia. We hear from a psychologist who worked with gang members in the California prison system, and she explains that the Mexican Mafia is able to maintain its power because of the intense loyalty its members feel toward one another. This loyalty is created through a mix of fear and respect. Members of the gang know that if they don't follow the rules, they could be subjected to the same torture they've seen inflicted on others. At the same time, they also know that the Mexican Mafia will protect them if they're ever in trouble.

Of course, this loyalty also makes it difficult for members to leave the gang. As one former member explains, the Mexican Mafia is like a family - and leaving means turning your back on that family forever. This is no easy decision, especially since leaving can often mean putting your life in danger.

Throughout the episode, we hear from a variety of people who have been affected by the Mexican Mafia's use of torture. There are family members of victims who describe how their loved ones were tortured and killed. There are also former gang members who describe the torture they witnessed, as well as their own experiences with being tortured.

While "To Torture or To Kill" is not an easy episode to watch, it is an important one. It shines a light on a world that few of us ever see, and it forces us to confront the realities of a gang that is still operating today. Ultimately, this episode serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of gang violence - and the need for all of us to work toward a more peaceful, just society.
