On A Moonless Night, Insects Are Drawn To The Light is the 61st episode of Gintama Season 2. The show is set in an alternate version of Edo where aliens have invaded and samurais are no longer needed. Instead, we follow the antics of eccentric characters running an odd jobs business.

In this particular episode, we see a rare serious tone for the show. Gintoki, the main character, is approached by a woman named Otose. Otose is an important figure in the show as she runs the bar where Gintoki and his friends always hang out. She tells him about a boy named Tatsugoro who is going around town rioting. Gintoki is uninterested at first, but Otose mentions that Tatsugoro was once her son-in-law.

Gintoki and his friend Kagura agree to help Otose and find Tatsugoro. The first half of the episode is a comedic sequence where the trio essentially go on a wild goose chase trying to find the troubled boy. They eventually find him, but it's not the happy reunion Otose was hoping for.

Tatsugoro explains that he is rioting because he was fired from work. Otose tries to understand, but the situation takes a turn when a group of thugs approach. They are the ones who fired Tatsugoro, and they are not happy that he is causing a ruckus. The trio fight off the thugs, but it's clear that Tatsugoro is not going to change his ways.

The latter half of the episode is much darker in tone. Gintoki and Tatsugoro are left alone in a warehouse while everyone regroups. This is where we learn more about Tatsugoro's character. He explains that he used to be an idealistic young man who wanted to make a difference in the world. But after working for the corrupt company that fired him, he became disillusioned. He lost his passion and eventually hit rock bottom.

Gintoki listens to Tatsugoro, but he's not one for pep talks. He simply tells Tatsugoro that he can either continue being useless or start making a change in his life. It's a simple message, but it resonates with Tatsugoro. The episode ends with Otose and Tatsugoro reconciling, but not before a reminder that there are consequences to one's actions.

Overall, On A Moonless Night, Insects Are Drawn To The Light is a standout episode in Gintama Season 2. The show is known for its wacky humor, but this episode shows that it can tackle serious topics as well. Tatsugoro's story is relatable and adds depth to the show's recurring characters. It's a well-paced and well-written episode that provides a refreshing change of pace.
