Lucy Sells Craig to Wayne Newton is the ninth episode of the first season of the American television show Here's Lucy, starring Lucille Ball as Lucy Carmichael. In this episode, Lucy tries to help her teenage daughter Kim raise funds for her school's music program by auctioning off the services of her oldest son, Craig, to the highest bidder.
When Kim tells her mother about the school's need for instruments, Lucy decides to organize a fundraising event. She decides to auction off Craig's services as a personal assistant for a day, and hopes to fetch a high price from one of the wealthy parents in the area. However, when Craig shows little enthusiasm for the idea, Lucy realizes she may have some trouble finding a buyer.
Enter Wayne Newton, the famous singer and entertainer. Lucy and her friend Mary Jane spot him at a local diner, and Lucy sees an opportunity to sell Craig to him. Despite Craig's objections, Lucy manages to introduce him to Newton and convinces him to buy Craig's services for $500.
But the plan starts to unravel when the job turns out to be much more than Craig bargained for. Newton, who is in town to perform at the local casino, needs Craig to act as his personal escort for the day, which includes driving him around town and attending a variety of events with him. Craig, who is used to spending his days lounging by the pool, is not thrilled with the prospect of being Newton's lackey.
Meanwhile, Lucy is dealing with her own problems. Her brother-in-law Harry has been staying with her since his wife left him, and he's starting to wear out his welcome. Lucy tries to be supportive, but Harry's constant complaints and demands are getting on her nerves.
As Craig struggles to keep up with Newton's demands, Lucy tries to find a way out of her own problems. She decides to set Harry up with a job, hoping that it will encourage him to move out. Her plan backfires when Harry takes a job as a busboy in a fancy restaurant and proceeds to insult the customers and ruin the dinner service.
Back at the casino, Craig is starting to lose his patience with Newton, who is becoming increasingly demanding. When Newton asks him to give up his shirt for a fan, Craig finally snaps and quits on the spot. But when Lucy finds out what's happened, she's worried that the whole fundraising event will be ruined.
In the end, Lucy comes up with a plan to save the day. She convinces Newton to perform at the school's fundraising event, and he agrees to do it for free. The event is a huge success, and Craig is able to redeem himself by playing piano in the school's jazz band. Harry even manages to redeem himself by impressing the restaurant's head chef with his cooking skills.
Lucy Sells Craig to Wayne Newton is a classic episode of Here's Lucy that showcases the show's trademark blend of comedy, music, and family dynamics. With its lighthearted humor and heartwarming moments, it's a perfect example of why Lucille Ball remains one of the most beloved figures in television history.
