In Heroes season 1 episode 20, titled "Five Years Gone," viewers are transported five years into the future where things are much different in the lives of our favorite characters. The world is a much darker place, with telepathic Senator Nathan Petrelli as the President of the United States, having outlawed all things related to evolving powers. The few remaining hero survivors have gone into hiding, relegated to living in a subterranean level beneath a ruined New York City.
In this dystopian future, viewers see the return of Hiro, older and more powerful than ever before, but also haunted by the events of the past. He teams up with Ando, who has also evolved his power, to try and prevent a catastrophic event that has led to this dark future, but they quickly realize that it’s no easy task. Meanwhile, Peter has been missing for years and Mohinder, now his former colleague and enemy, has become a ruthless company man – hunting down those with evolved powers to experiment on them in the name of national security.
Back in the present, the remaining heroes are devastated by the events that have taken place in the future. Matt Parkman has a vision of the future and must decide whether or not to follow the path that he saw or try to prevent it from happening by joining forces with the other heroes. Meanwhile, Claire and her father HRG are forced to flee when they are discovered by agents from the Company, leaving them to wonder if they will also end up in the dark future.
With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, the heroes must work together to prevent the catastrophe that led to the terrible future they witnessed. As they struggle to change their own future, they must also contend with the challenges of the present, including the continuing fallout from the explosion in New York City. Heroes season 1 episode 20 is a thrilling and emotional ride that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
