In the seventeenth episode of Highlander season 2, titled "Counterfeit (1)," we find Duncan MacLeod embroiled in a case involving a string of counterfeit operations. The story begins with a group of criminals who try to kill Duncan with their car but he escapes. The driver of the vehicle is later found dead, and Duncan realizes that they were after him because of his recent involvement in another counterfeit operation. He begins to investigate the case, determined to put an end to the illegal activities for good.
As he delves deeper into the investigation, he discovers that the counterfeiters are more deeply rooted in society than he had initially suspected. They are able to produce such high-quality counterfeit money that it is almost impossible to tell it apart from the real thing. In order to get closer to the criminals, Duncan begins to frequent a casino that they are known to frequent.
It is at the casino that he meets a woman named Theresa, who works as a dealer. She has a troubled past and Duncan becomes her confidante, seeking her help in uncovering the counterfeiters. However, she is reluctant to get involved, fearing for her own safety.
Meanwhile, Duncan discovers that the counterfeiters have links to a corrupt police officer named Mara. He tries to gather evidence against her, but she is one step ahead of him, and he is forced to flee the scene. He realizes that he needs help if he is going to take down the counterfeiters and decides to enlist the help of his immortal friend, Hugh Fitzcairn.
Hugh is an old friend of Duncan's from the Scottish highlands. He is a charming rogue with a seemingly endless supply of tricks up his sleeve. Together, they hatch a plan to infiltrate the counterfeiters and gather evidence against them.
As their plan unfolds, they become embroiled in a world of deceit and danger. They discover that the counterfeiters are planning a massive operation that will involve the distribution of large amounts of fake money. They must act quickly to prevent this from happening, but they are constantly beset by obstacles and setbacks.
The tension builds as the counterfeiters close in on Duncan and Hugh. It seems as though they might be caught, but they manage to outsmart their pursuers and make a daring escape. However, the cost of their operation is high, and they are left wondering if their efforts were worth it.
