Ep 1. Say Goodbye

After a heart-pounding season five finale, How To Get Away With Murder is back with its final season. Episode one, Say Goodbye, opens with Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) in a courtroom, defending a defendant for charges of drug trafficking. As usual, she has a way with her words, and her fiery defense secures an innocent verdict for the defendant. However, the victory is short-lived, as the District Attorney, Ronald Miller (John Hensley), and other prosecuting attorneys, reveal that they have found recordings of Annalise's conversations with her students, which implicates her in their crimes.

Meanwhile, Annalise's associates and law students, Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King), Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee), Asher Millstone (Matt McGorry), and Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) are all dealing with the aftermath of the events that led to the death of their classmate Wes Gibbins (Alfred Enoch). Michaela has been working at prestigious law firm, Caplan & Gold, but is struggling with her job and grappling with her conscience, knowing that she and her friends are responsible for Wes's death. Connor has been juggling his relationship with Oliver (Conrad Ricamora), who is still recovering from his injuries sustained in the finale, and his guilt over Wes's death. Asher is trying to get his life back on track, following his dad's wrongful conviction and eventual release from prison. And Laurel is trying to process the news that her father, Jorge Castillo (Esai Morales), is alive and responsible for Wes's death.

As the episode progresses, we see Annalise dealing with the fallout from the recordings, with Miller and the DA's office threatening to charge her with the crimes her students committed. She turns to her trusted friend and former lover, Nate Lahey (Billy Brown), for help, asking him to find out who is behind the recordings and what their motives are. Nate, still reeling from the death of his father, agrees to help her.

Meanwhile, Michaela impresses the partners at Caplan & Gold with her legal skills, but when she discovers evidence that implicates Annalise in a case, she begins to question whether she wants to continue working there. Connor and Oliver continue to struggle with their relationship, with Connor feeling guilty over Wes's death, and Oliver struggling with his physical and emotional recovery. Asher reconnects with his ex-girlfriend, and Laurel confides in her brother, who encourages her to take action against their father.

The episode ends with a shocking twist, as a character we thought was dead is revealed to be alive, and someone close to Annalise is murdered. Say Goodbye sets the stage for a tense and thrilling final season of How To Get Away With Murder, leaving us wondering who will survive and what other secrets will be uncovered.
