Mary Shannon is back in the third episode of In Plain Sight's second season, "A Stand-Up Triple." This episode follows the struggles Mary faces when dealing with family and work conflicts.
At the beginning of the episode, Mary's sister Brandi shows up at Mary's doorstep in the middle of the night. Brandi, a recovering addict, asks Mary for help in finding her ex-boyfriend, a man who was her supplier and likely caused her to relapse. Throughout the episode, Mary struggles with the responsibility of protecting the baseball player, handling her sister's issues, and managing the church investigation. Brandi's reckless behavior puts Mary in a difficult situation, as she tries to keep her sister safe while also protecting the baseball player.
As Mary juggles all these responsibilities, the tension between her and Marshall continues to build. Marshall is frustrated with Mary's lack of communication, and he's skeptical about her motivations for helping her sister. In turn, Mary is annoyed with Marshall's interference in her personal life.
Despite the challenges Mary faces, she's able to make progress in both investigations. She uncovers some surprising information about the death threats and makes a breakthrough in the church investigation. At the end of the episode, Mary and Marshall share a moment of understanding and start to work collaboratively again.
