As Kagome and Inuyasha head towards Mt. Hakurei, they come across a young orphaned girl named Kohaku who has lost her memory. Meanwhile, Miroku, Sango, and Shippo face off against Naraku's demons as they try to protect the village that Kohaku originates from. Inuyasha plans to investigate a barrier on the mountain that he thinks is related to the Shikon Jewel and encounters an old enemy, Kikyo. Kikyo informs Inuyasha about Mt. Hakurei's unique powers and warns him about the dangers he may face on the mountain. As they start to ascend the mountain, Inuyasha and Kagome notice that the barrier not only purifies demons but also human souls, causing them to lose their memories.

As they continue up the mountain, Inuyasha and Kagome encounter a group of traveling monks who are on a pilgrimage to purify themselves. The monks offer to guide Inuyasha and Kagome through the mountain, but their intentions turn out to be more complex than they initially let on. Inuyasha and Kagome soon discover that the monks are not traveling to purify themselves, but rather to destroy the barrier and release their master, Hakushin, who has been trapped inside it for centuries. The monks believe that Hakushin's release will bring about peace and prosperity, but Inuyasha and Kagome are skeptical.

Inuyasha and Kagome continue up the mountain and are ambushed by Naraku's demons. Inuyasha's demon powers become weakened due to the barrier's effects, making him unable to protect Kagome. However, Kagome refuses to leave Inuyasha's side and together they manage to fend off the attackers. As they rest and recuperate, Inuyasha opens up to Kagome about his feelings towards Kikyo and his confusion about his loyalty to her. Kagome listens to Inuyasha's concerns and offers him reassurance, prompting Inuyasha to realize his true feelings for Kagome.

As night falls, Inuyasha and Kagome make camp and are visited by Kikyo. Kikyo reveals to them that the temple on the mountain was built to hold back a demon army that will soon be released if the barrier is destroyed. She also warns them that if the barrier is broken, the souls of the dead will be unable to move on and will be trapped forever. Inuyasha is torn between his desire to save Kikyo and his duty to protect the living. Kikyo challenges Inuyasha to face his true feelings and make a choice.

The next morning, Inuyasha and Kagome continue up the mountain and come across the monks attempting to break the barrier. Inuyasha engages in a fierce battle with the monks, but is eventually overpowered. However, Kagome manages to purify the darkness in one of the monks' hearts with her arrows, causing him to realize the error of his ways. The monk sacrifices himself to protect Inuyasha and the barrier remains intact.

In the end, Inuyasha and Kagome reach the temple at the top of Mt. Hakurei and encounter Hakushin, who is revealed to be a giant Buddha statue. Hakushin thanks Inuyasha and Kagome for protecting the barrier and agrees to allow them to leave the mountain unharmed. As they depart, Inuyasha expresses his gratitude to Kagome for her unwavering support and confesses his love for her. Kagome reciprocates his feelings and the two share a tender moment. With their bond strengthened, Inuyasha and Kagome are ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
