Mum's the Word, the third episode of season 5 of the hit television show Just Shoot Me, follows the staff of the fictional fashion magazine, Blush, as they navigate personal and professional challenges.
The episode opens with Maya Gallo (played by Laura San Giacomo), the no-nonsense journalist and single mother of the group, struggling to get her son enrolled in a prestigious preschool. After being rejected by several schools due to his age, Maya takes matters into her own hands and sneaks into a school to speak with the admissions officer. When her plan backfires, Maya is forced to turn to her colleague and friend, Elliott DiMauro (played by Enrico Colantoni), for help.
Meanwhile, Jack Gallo (played by George Segal), the charming but vain publisher of Blush, is dealing with his own family drama. His mother, Rose (played by Estelle Harris), comes to visit and quickly becomes a thorn in his side. Rose is overbearing, critical, and obsessed with matchmaking Jack with a woman from her bridge club. Jack enlists the help of Nina Van Horn (played by Wendy Malick), the glamorous and sometimes manipulative former model and his ex-girlfriend, to keep his mother occupied.
In the midst of Maya and Jack's family drama, the rest of the Blush staff is dealing with their own problems. Dennis Finch (played by David Spade), the sharp-tongued and opportunistic assistant, is attempting to sell a stolen necklace to a wealthy socialite. However, his plan goes awry when he realizes the necklace was stolen from her in the first place. Meanwhile, Kevin Liotta (played by Brian Posehn), the socially awkward programmer, is tasked with creating a video for Blush's upcoming fashion show.
As the episode progresses, Maya and Jack's family issues come to a head. Maya learns from Elliott that she needs to let her son be a kid and stop pushing him so hard, leading to a heartwarming moment between mother and son. Jack, on the other hand, finally stands up to his mother and tells her that he doesn't need her interference in his love life. Rose storms out, but not before leaving an important message for Jack about family.
The episode ends with Finch getting the last laugh in his necklace heist, Kevin creating a bizarre but well-received fashion show video, and Maya and Jack's family drama resolved. Mum's the Word showcases the unique blend of humor, heart, and fashion that made Just Shoot Me a beloved sitcom during its run from 1997 to 2003.
